Our scholarship program, cPort University, has kicked off this year with 24 workshops to date in 9 elementary schools.
This year, cPort staff will read over 1,200 essays from students in grades 3-6 from Portland, Augusta, and Scarborough. To date, cPort University has awarded over $40,000 to elementary students chasing their dreams! cPort University begins with an in-class workshop led by Bob Stuart of Maine College Circle. He talks with students, asking them what their interests are, what their career goals may be, and offers resources about what colleges the students might be interested in.
Students have the opportunity to win a $100 scholarship by writing an application essay about their aspirations and where they would like to go to college to achieve them. In their essays, we ask that they answer two questions: What interests you today that might make a great career for you in the future? What college would you like to attend and what would you want to study to prepare for this career? cPort employees will review every essay and select about 10% of essays submitted to receive a scholarship!
Scholarships are awarded at a ceremony at each school and recipients are recognized in front of their peers, the highlight of the program! Earnie the Starfish attends the ceremony and every student is given a scholarship t-shirt.
cPort University is in its 9th year and continues to grow and inspire new students every year. To learn more (and to see last year’s photos), check out our cPort University page!
