cPort is proud to support Fikiria, a new storefront space for emerging entrepreneurs that provides business support services and below-market rent. Fikiria, which means “imagine” in Swahili, is a program of Catholic Charities of Maine.
Tae Chong, Manager of Social Enterprise and Workforce Development at Catholic Charities Maine, shepherded Fikiria’s development from concept to opening. He approached cPort to sponsor the space in Spring 2018 in order to subsidize the cost of rent for participating entrepreneurs as well as provide training services in areas such as marketing, customer service, and point of sale systems.
Fikiria held its ribbon cutting celebration on February 12, 2019 at the space in Threads of Hope Thrift on Brighton Ave. in Portland. Tae and Catholic Charities CEO Steve Letourneau delivered remarks about the space, as well as event host Kerem Durdag. Maine Technology Institute and cPort were recognized as Fikiria’s sponsors. Coincidentally, MTI’s President, Brian Whitney, and cPort’s President & CEO Gene Ardito are brothers-in-law and enjoyed the family connection at the event.
We look forward to supporting these businesses’ future growth!
