Important Update: Pennies Available As Supplies Last
The decision to stop penny production was made by our national government and the minting authority. Over recent years, the penny has become increasingly costly to produce, significantly exceeding its face value. As a result, the government announced the official end of penny production, and the national mint ceased distribution.
As of now, pennies are no longer being produced, and our credit union can no longer order new pennies for distribution. We want to ensure that our members are informed and supported during this transition.
What This Means for You
Depositing Pennies: You are still welcome to deposit any pennies you currently have. Bring your coins to any branch, and our staff will assist you with the deposit process. Our coin machines will continue to remain a place where pennies can be deposited as well!
Using Pennies: While pennies remain legal tender, availability in circulation will decrease over time. Consider using your pennies for purchases, depositing them, or donating to local charities that accept coin donations.
Transactions: Cash transactions at our branches that require change may be rounded to the nearest five cents. We recommend discussing any concerns with our tellers when making transactions.
Tips for Consumers
- Use up your pennies at retailers or deposit them at your credit union before availability declines further.
- Be aware that some cash transactions will be rounded to the nearest five cents, and plan accordingly.
- Ask questions if you're unsure about how rounding works or how your transaction will be affected.
- Participate in coin drives or charity collections that accept pennies, giving your coins a new purpose.
- Switch to debit, credit, or other electronic payments to avoid rounding on cash transactions.
Tips for Businesses
- Update your pricing and point-of-sale systems to reflect rounding policies, ensuring clarity for staff and customers.
- Train employees on how to communicate rounding procedures and handle cash transactions smoothly.
- Display signage at checkouts explaining the change, so customers know what to expect.
- Encourage electronic payments to minimize the need for change.
